Thiruvananthapuram, May 8: The principal of the Believer's Church English Medium School at Gurupuram in Alappuzha district has been suspended pending an inquiry into the incident of a Muslim girl student being issued transfer certificate for wearing a headscarf.
The management of the school placed the principal, Mary Jecinta, on suspension following an agreement reached at a conciliatory meeting called in this regard by the district collector.
As reported, T N Nabala, a student of Class IX, was issued the transfer certificate after the principal said the pupil could not to come to school wearing the headscarf (maftha), a Muslim religious custom. There were widespread protests against the incident.
While District Magistrate Venugopal said the issue was being resolved amicably, Nabala's father Naseer Musaliar, who is also the Imam of the local madrassa, said he did not want his child to be admitted back. He has also demanded criminal proceedings against the principal.
The Central Board of Secondary Education had also written to the School seeking clarification on reports about the girl's ouster.
