Bengaluru, Oct 17: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President D.K. Shivakumar said on Friday that he would always be looked upon as a Congressman, and not a caste leader.

Speaking to reporters here, Shivakumar said that he is a Vokkaliga because he is an agriculturist and was born to Vokkaliga parents.

“No doubt I am proud of my caste Vokkaliga. But that doesn’t mean that I would indulge in caste or religion-based politics. Being a Congress member and KPCC President, I have only one caste and that is Congress. Why should I speak about other castes,” he shot back to his rivals in general and JD(S) leader H.D. Kumarswamy in particular.

He said that there is no politics involved in attracting people into the party fold and all these things generally happen during every election.

“In every election, our rivals BJP and JD(S) do the same by visiting our party leaders and we also do it, which is just fair and square. Why should anyone be worried about it,” he asked.

Categorically ruling out any race between him and Kumaraswamy for the Vokkaliga leadership, a dominant community in the south Karnataka region to which both leaders belong, Shivakumar said that he has never indulged in caste politics and for him Congress is his only caste.

On Thursday, Kumaraswamy had alleged that the Congress, which lacks a worker base in Rajarajeshwari Nagar (R.R. Nagara) Assembly constituency, was trying to lure his party workers ahead of the by-elections.

R.R. Nagara, along with the Sira Assembly segment in Tumakuru, will go to bypolls on November 3.

With both seats having considerable presence of the Vokkaliga community, winning them is crucial for both the leaders to consolidate their position in the community.

With the community seen as a strong vote base of JD(S), Kumaraswamy is looking at keeping it intact. Shivakumar, who is the top leader in the Congress from the community, is looking at consolidating his position within the party by winning the bypolls.

Winning R.R. Nagar is even more crucial for him as it comes under the Bangalore Rural Lok Sabha constituency, represented by his brother D.K. Suresh.

In this constituency, Congress has pitted political greenhorn Kusuma H against battle hardened N. Munirathna of the BJP.

In Sira, Congress has fielded party veteran and former minister T.B. Jayachandra against Ammajamma of the JD(S), the widow of late party MLA Sathyanarayana, and Rajesh Gowda of the BJP.

The Sira by-elections were necessitated following the death of JD(S) legislator B. Sathyanarayana in August, while the R.R. Nagar seat fell vacant after the disqualification of Congress MLA N. Munirathna under the anti-defection law last year.

Bengaluru, Oct 20: A letter and parcel addressed to the magistrate of the NDPS court and the city court threatening to carry out attacks if the accused in the drug racket case and “innocent people” arrested in D.J. Halli case were not released is being investigated by the Halasurugate police.

According to the police, the parcel addressed to magistrate Seenappa was found on the court hall-37 premises on Monday. The parcel was kept outside. The staff opened and noticed in it a detonator-like substance and immediately alerted the police.

The police, with the bomb squad, arrived at the spot and recovered the substance.

D.J. Halli case

The letter demanded bail for arrested actors Ragini Dwivedi and Sanjjanaa Galrani, and also release of innocent people” arrested “in the K.G. Halli and D.J. Halli violence case.

Sandeep Patil, Joint Commissioner of Police, said a case is being booked and investigation is on to ascertain the source of the letter.

The police are contemplating providing security to the magistrate in the wake of the threat letter. The police suspect that it could be an act of mischief mongers to create fear psychosis. “However, we are taking this very seriously,” a police officer said.

The police are analysing CCTV camera footage and inquiring with the court security and housekeeping staff to ascertain if they had noticed anything suspicious.

Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo has tested positive for Covid-19, Portugal's Football Federation said in a statement on its website on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old Juventus striker will miss Wednesday's UEFA Nations League game against Sweden but is "well, has no symptoms and is in isolation", the federation said.

The federation added that the rest of the Portugal squad had undergone tests as a result of Ronaldo's positive, but that they had all tested negative and would be available for the Sweden match.

Five-times world player of the year Ronaldo appeared in his side's 0-0 draw away to France in the Nations League on Sunday and Wednesday's 0-0 draw in a friendly at home to Spain.

He will now be doubtful for Juve's Serie A trip to Crotone on Saturday and their Champions League group stage opening game away to Dynamo Kiev next Tuesday.

Bengaluru, Oct 14: Taking strong exception to the Bengaluru police naming Congress party leaders in its B'luru riots case charge-sheet, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president D. K. Shivakumar on Wednesday said they won't succumb to such unethical pressure tactics.

Speaking to reporters after taking part in the nomination filing of Congress party Rarajarajeswari Nagar candidate, Kusuma H here, Shivakumar asserted that the ruling BJP in Karnataka has become issueless and as a result, keeps haunting Congress leaders.

Shivakumar charged that the city police were under "tremendous pressure" to include the names of those corporators that the media has today highlighted.

"The very fact that police took so long to name them is case in point that they were under tremendous pressure from the ruling BJP," he alleged

The KPCC president further noted that just a week ago, central agencies had raided him and the central agencies had been conducting an inquiry on the party's former state president, Dr G. Parameshwara. "Now the state police have also joined the same league by naming our party corporators. People are seeing their game of vindictiveness," he said.

According to him, the BJP always looks for an excuse to divert people's attention to hide its failures.

"BJP's mis-management of Covid is a well-documented fact. Besides this, they have decisively failed in tackling farmers issues. The BJP had been thriving on such issues alone. The day people realise their machinations, the BJP will stand exposed," he said.
