Community women obtain weeklong training in radio production

Mangalore, December 12: “Unlike other radio stations, community radio's aim is to educate the masses on various aspects of life, apart from providing some entertainment”, said Rev Fr Swebert D'silva, the Principal of St Aloysius College.

He was speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of 'Baseline Survey and Capacity Building'; a weeklong training programme for women organized by the National Council for Science and Technology in association with Community Radio Sarang 107.8 MHz on Monday, December 12, at St Aloysius College, Mangalore.

Fr Swebert said that Community Radio provided people an opportunity to receive education, especially those who do not have the privilege to come to school every day.

This yearlong project is an effort made by the CEMA, the national division of the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) to instruct women on producing radio programmes for the community, covering topics that deal with women's issues, especially those pertaining to health and living.

The facilitator for the event, Mr Kartik Panchapakasen, Lecturer of Communication at Bangalore said that this workshop would not only be beneficial in terms of radio production but also education for life.

The six day workshop will have first three days of baseline survey and on the field learning followed by three days of training and producing radio programmes, he added.

He also encouraged the students of Masters of Communication and Media Studies (MCMS) at St Aloysius College to actively participate in the programme along with the community women.

The Director of Community Radio Sarang 107.8, Rev Dr Richard Rego, staff of Radio Sarang, Department of Mass Communication, in addition to community women from Mangalore and its surroundings participated in the event.

Why Mangaluru Could Become India’s Next Offshore Wind Energy Hub

Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta has urged the Centre to give high priority to offshore wind energy generation along the Mangaluru coast, citing its strategic importance to India’s green energy and port-led development goals.

Raising the issue in the Lok Sabha under Rule 377, Chowta said studies by the National Institute of Oceanography have identified the Mangaluru coastline as part of India’s promising offshore wind ‘Zone-2’, covering nearly 6,490 sq km. He noted that the region’s relatively low exposure to cyclones and earthquakes makes it suitable for long-term offshore wind projects and called for its development as a dedicated offshore wind energy zone.

Highlighting the role of New Mangalore Port, Chowta said its modern infrastructure, multiple berths and heavy cargo-handling capacity position it well as a logistics hub for transporting and assembling large wind energy equipment.

He also pointed to the presence of major industrial units such as MRPL, OMPL, UPCL and the Mangaluru SEZ, which could serve as direct buyers of green power through power purchase agreements, improving project viability and speeding up execution.

With Karnataka’s peak power demand crossing 18,000 MW in early 2025, Chowta stressed the need to diversify renewable energy sources. He added that offshore wind projects in the Arabian Sea are strategically safer compared to the cyclone-prone Bay of Bengal.

Calling the project vital to India’s target of 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030, Chowta urged the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy to initiate resource assessments, pilot projects and stakeholder consultations at the earliest.
