Protest rally on Tuesday against 'misleading' CBI inquiry on Mangalore Qazi's death

Mangalore, December 17: A massive rally and meeting will be held on Tuesday 20^th December in Mangalore protesting against the 'misleading' CBI report on the mysterious death of former Mangalore Qazi C.M. Abdullah Musliyar a couple of years ago.

The rally will begin at the Ambedkar Circle (Jyothi Circle) and will conclude at the D.C. Office with a protest meeting to be addressed by the Dakshina Kannada Qazi Al-haj Twaqa Ahmed Musliyar, among others.

The speakers will expose the truth behind the mysterious death of the Qazi and unravel the conspiracy of the CBI which they alleged was trying to suppress the truth.

The body of Chembarika Musliyar was found on the sea shore near his home in Kasargod district on 15 February 2010. According to the post-mortem report, his spinal cord was broken even before his death and several wound were also found on his body. A pair of sandals, torchlight and a walking stick was found on the rock just a few yards from the place where his body was found lying.

From the very beginning the police had been trying to project it as a case of suicide, but following widespread outcry the case was handed over to the Crime Branch and subsequently to the CBI.

The evidences found near the crime scene and the post-mortem report had given credence to the suspicion that Qazi was indeed bludgeoned to death, the members of the Action Committee formed to fight for the impartial inquiry into the death of the Qazi said at a press meet in Mangalore on Saturday.

Former Mayor K. Ashraf, convener of the committee, Kodijal Ibrahim Haji,vice-president Muslim Central Committee, Abdul Aziz Darimi Kallega, Mohammed Haneef, trustee Jumma Masjid, Bunder, K. Mammunhi, convener Samastha Co-ordination Committee, Mustafa Haji, president, Uppinangady Jumma Masjid and Abdul Hameed Kudroli were present at the press meet.

They urged the Central Government to order a high-level CBI inquiry under the supervision of Kerala High Court into the death of the Qazi and said that a memorandum would be submitted to the President and the Prime Minister in this regard.

From malls to highways, Kannada signboards to be enforced in Dakshina Kannada

Mangaluru: Urban local bodies and gram panchayats should make the use of Kannada on signboards mandatory while issuing trade licences to commercial establishments, Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Darshan HV said. He also called for regular inspections to ensure compliance.

Presiding over the District Kannada Awareness Committee meeting at the deputy commissioner’s office, Darshan said the city corporation would be directed to ensure that shops operating in malls prominently display their names in Kannada. “All commercial establishments, including shops, companies, offices and hotels, must mandatorily display their names in Kannada on signboards,” he said.

The deputy commissioner added that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) would be instructed to include Kannada on signboards along national highways. Banks, he said, would be directed through committee meetings to provide application forms in Kannada.

“Even if English-medium schools and colleges impart education in English, their signboards must display the institution’s name in Kannada. Steps will also be taken to ensure that private buses display place names in Kannada,” Darshan said.

During the meeting, committee members raised concerns over the closure of Kannada-medium schools in rural areas due to a shortage of teachers and stressed the need for immediate corrective measures. They also pointed out that several industries employ workers from other states while overlooking local candidates.

Members further demanded that nationalised banks provide deposit and withdrawal slips in Kannada. It was brought to the deputy commissioner’s notice that the presence of staff without knowledge of Kannada in rural branches of nationalised banks is causing hardship to local customers.

Meanwhile, MP Srinath, president of the District Kannada Sahitya Parishat, urged the district administration to allot land for the construction of a district Kannada Bhavana in Mangaluru.
