MU to confer honourary doctorates only on genuine achievers this time

Mangalore, December 26: Mangalore University has decided to confer honorary doctorate on only three persons, following Varsity's stand to identify and recognize genuine achievers and contributors.

The Syndicate has decided to be very careful while conferring the honorary doctorate because in the past the University had given this honour to some social activists, politicians and businessmen, which had fuelled controversies. There were allegations from various quarters that honorary doctorate degrees are being purchased by the powerful.

Even last year the honour was given to three persons- senior litterateur Bannanje Govinda Acharya, tulu writer D K Chowta and former DGP Ajai Kumar Singh as against a total of 20 applications that were received. This year too the tradition of three doctorate degrees will continue.

Sources in Mangalore University informed Deccan Herald that the names of the three eligible persons for the honour will be selected and sent to the Governor for approval.

“Earlier seven to eight persons were given honorary doctorate, which is a clear violation of the rules. The trend had increased over last eight to ten years,” said the source adding that art, culture, science and technology and education sector have been considered strongly this year.

University Vice-Chancellor Prof T C Shivashankarmurthy affirming the same said that it is true that the University has taken a stand of conferring honorary doctorate on either three or four achievers.

The University intends to reopen the Colleges under its jurisdiction by June 1, from next academic year. The examinations will be completed by April 10 and results would be declared by May.

Though the classes were to resume on November 28, after the mid term holidays, due to change in examination schedule and delay in evaluation the colleges reopened only on December 5. The University had decided not to let such things repeat in future.

‘Nothing for Karnataka’: DKS slams Union Budget, flags Bengaluru neglect

Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Sunday criticised the Union Budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, claiming it offered no tangible benefit to the state.

Though he said he was yet to study the budget in detail, Shivakumar asserted that Karnataka had gained little from it. “There is no benefit for our state from the central budget. I was observing it. They have now named a programme after Mahatma Gandhi, after repealing the MGNREGA Act that was named after him,” he said.

Speaking to reporters here, the Deputy Chief Minister demanded the restoration of MGNREGA, and made it clear that the newly enacted rural employment scheme — VB-G RAM G — which proposes a 60:40 fund-sharing formula between the Centre and the states, would not be implemented in Karnataka.

“I don’t see any major share for our state in this budget,” he added.

Shivakumar, who also holds charge of Bengaluru development, said there were high expectations for the city from the Union Budget. “The Prime Minister calls Bengaluru a ‘global city’, but what has the Centre done for it?” he asked.

He also drew attention to the problems faced by sugar factories, particularly those in the cooperative sector, alleging a lack of timely decisions and support from the central government.

Noting that the Centre has the authority to fix the minimum support price (MSP) for agricultural produce, Shivakumar said the Union government must take concrete steps to protect farmers’ interests.
