Acharya inaugurates Yogic Sciences building at M'lore Varsity; Lays emphasis on Sanskrit

Mangalore, January 25: Minister for Higher Education Dr V S Acharya assured to extend all the support for the development works at Department of Human Consciousness and Yogic Sciences at Mangalore University.

He was speaking after inaugurating newly constructed building of department of Human Consciousness and Yogic sciences, Dharmanidhi Yoga Peetha at Mangalore University here on Wednesday, January 25.

He also laid emphasis on the study of Sanskrit, saying that the ancient language was not only confined to Vedic knowledge. He said that mathematics, science and Yoga were also branches of Sanskrit language, which according to him was a treasure-trove of knowledge. Unfortunately the language was not given importance it deserved, he lamented.

He also promised full support from the State government if the University was willing to set a Centre on Sanskrit language.

Appreciating the efforts of Mangalore University on starting PG course on Yogic science he said Universities should become centres to form the future of students.

Chief guest, former vice chancellor of Bangalore University K Siddappa said Yoga enhances internal beauty as well as external beauty of individual.

Mangalore University Vice Chancellor Prof T C Shivashankara Murthy in his presidential address said that there were also diploma courses on Yoga for the public along with post-graduation and research.

He said it was only in 1998 that the full-fledged post graduate department in Yoga was started at Mangalore University.

On the occasion, in reorganisation of the service rendered by the temples of Old Dakshina Kannada, development of Dharmanidhi Yoga Peetha and the department of Human consciousness, the Higher Education Minister felicitated the donors of the temple trustees of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

Chairman Human Consciousness and Yogic sciences department, Dharmanidhi Yoga Peetha Dr K Krishna Bhat delivered introductory remark.

Associate Professor the department Dr Krishna Sharma proposed a vote of thanks.

Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Sunday criticised the Union Budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, claiming it offered no tangible benefit to the state.

Though he said he was yet to study the budget in detail, Shivakumar asserted that Karnataka had gained little from it. “There is no benefit for our state from the central budget. I was observing it. They have now named a programme after Mahatma Gandhi, after repealing the MGNREGA Act that was named after him,” he said.

Speaking to reporters here, the Deputy Chief Minister demanded the restoration of MGNREGA, and made it clear that the newly enacted rural employment scheme — VB-G RAM G — which proposes a 60:40 fund-sharing formula between the Centre and the states, would not be implemented in Karnataka.

“I don’t see any major share for our state in this budget,” he added.

Shivakumar, who also holds charge of Bengaluru development, said there were high expectations for the city from the Union Budget. “The Prime Minister calls Bengaluru a ‘global city’, but what has the Centre done for it?” he asked.

He also drew attention to the problems faced by sugar factories, particularly those in the cooperative sector, alleging a lack of timely decisions and support from the central government.

Noting that the Centre has the authority to fix the minimum support price (MSP) for agricultural produce, Shivakumar said the Union government must take concrete steps to protect farmers’ interests.
