Pulse polio drive on Sunday: Health Department gears up to vaccinate over 1.6 lakh children

Mangalore, February 17: The District Health Officer on Friday urged the parents with children below five years of age to compulsorily administer the polio vaccination to their children, as the first phase of polio vaccination administering for the year 2011-12 was scheduled on Sunday, February 19.

Speaking to media persons here on Friday, DK DHO Dr O R Srirangappa informed that the District Health Department has set an aim to vaccinate as many as 1,65,136 children on coming Sunday and a total of 921 booths have been formed across the district to administer polio vaccines. A total of 3,788 volunteers, 187 supervisors, six mobile units, 21 transit teams, 655 health department staff, 2,102 Anganawadi workers, 1,045 Asha workers, 105 officers have been deployed for the purpose. The intended drops to be vaccinated is 2,17,271, said the DHO.

He also informed that godowns for storing polio vaccination have been opened at the District Health office, Taluk Health centre, government hospitals, urban family welfare centres, community health centres and primary health centres.

The DHO said that the polio drive for the year 2011-12 has been formed in the State keeping in mind the migrant labourers. Though the last polio case in the State was registered in 1999, a few polio cases have been recorded in North Indian states and therefore the State is apprehensive about the chances of recurring of polio cases in the State through migrant labourers from North.

The District Health Department is facing problem in the process of prevention of polio especially from the residents of flats and apartments who are non-co-operative. District Health and Family Welfare officer Dr O R Onkarappa said that there are chances of polio cases getting reported in the district because of the migrant labourers. As they are ignorant towards polio drops, the Department has decided to give special attention to them and vaccinate the children of migrant labourers this year, he informed.

‘Nothing for Karnataka’: DKS slams Union Budget, flags Bengaluru neglect

Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Sunday criticised the Union Budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, claiming it offered no tangible benefit to the state.

Though he said he was yet to study the budget in detail, Shivakumar asserted that Karnataka had gained little from it. “There is no benefit for our state from the central budget. I was observing it. They have now named a programme after Mahatma Gandhi, after repealing the MGNREGA Act that was named after him,” he said.

Speaking to reporters here, the Deputy Chief Minister demanded the restoration of MGNREGA, and made it clear that the newly enacted rural employment scheme — VB-G RAM G — which proposes a 60:40 fund-sharing formula between the Centre and the states, would not be implemented in Karnataka.

“I don’t see any major share for our state in this budget,” he added.

Shivakumar, who also holds charge of Bengaluru development, said there were high expectations for the city from the Union Budget. “The Prime Minister calls Bengaluru a ‘global city’, but what has the Centre done for it?” he asked.

He also drew attention to the problems faced by sugar factories, particularly those in the cooperative sector, alleging a lack of timely decisions and support from the central government.

Noting that the Centre has the authority to fix the minimum support price (MSP) for agricultural produce, Shivakumar said the Union government must take concrete steps to protect farmers’ interests.
