Mangalore, February 22: Mangalore city police have busted one of the biggest ever vehicles theft syndicates under the limits of commissionerate, following the arrest of two notorious men, and recovery of stolen property worth around Rs 60 lakh.
Announcing this at a press meet here on Wednesday city police chief Seemanth Kumar Singh said that the accused used to replace the number plates and few parts of the stolen vehicle with that of an old vehicle to fool the traffic police.
Mr Singh said acting on a tip off Panambur police along with the help of north sub division police on Tuesday nabbed the two suspects both residents of Mangalore taluk. They are Naveen Noronha, aged 36, son of Late Lawrence Noronha residing at Kulshekhar and Dhananjay, aged 25, son of Balakrishna Poojary resident of Kakkebettu in Kulshekhar.
During interrogation the accused have admitted that they have stolen more than 13 vehicles in the past one year from different places like Bajpe, Panambur, Mulki, Kavoor, Moodbidri and Surathkal, the Commissioner said.
The confiscated property include four tipper lorries, a lorry top, body of tipper torry, six new tyres, an old tyre, three discs, four Jacks, a bullet motorbike, five-and-a-half ton of iron rods stolen from Mangalore East Police Station limits, a lorry used to transport the stolen goods, a Swift Desire car, a Matiz Car, a Kinetic motorbike.
Mr Singh said, when the police raided the houses of the accused, they also found fresh paint boxes used to paint the stolen vehicles. The gang used to target the vehicles without the GPS system, he said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Mutthuraya was also present during the press meet.
