Mangalore, April 4: Dr H Prabhakar, a chief interventional cardiologist, Fr. Muller Hospital, Mangalore has saved the life of a 78-year-old woman by performing a very unique and rare endovascular procedure, which was successful and reported to be first of its kind in the medical history of coastal Karnataka.
The patient Ms Sherline (name is changed), hailing from Kundapur, ailing from chronic diabetes was in critical health disorders and had consulted Dr. Prabhakar on last week of March and revealed her deteriorating health conditions added with fatigue and acute, intolerable pain in the abdomen.
Doctor on thorough investigation and clinical examination, evaluation, diagnosed her with a rare disease called Abdomen Aortic Aneurysm (severe dilation of aorta, which is stretched and on the verge of rupture), causing irregular circulation of blood and it was a serious threat to her life, which warranted emergency attention.
Instantly, Dr H Prabhakar swung into action and admitted her to the I.C.U and formed a team of experts comprising of Dr. Jayakrishna, cardio thoracic surgeon, Cardiologists Dr. Sayyed, Dr. Subhashchandra and Dr. Usha and anesthesiologist Dr. Harsha and performed a very complicated endovascular procedure by creating two holes in her thigh and passing an artificial device stunt and implanting across the aneurysm, thereby preventing it from rupture and restoring blood circulation.
The entire successful procedure lasted for three hours and the patient is responding to the treatment and recuperating speedily and most likely to be discharged from hospital within three days.
According to chief interventional cardiologist Dr. Prabhakar it is a rare disorder which affects only 7 persons among the one lakh population and it is usually associated with old age, hypertension and diabetes.
Director of FMCI Fr. Patrick Rodrigues has congratulated the team of doctors and revealed that the hospital is fully equipped to handle any complex cardiac procedures. Administrator Fr. Richard Coelho has complemented the team for performing a very complex procedure and saving the life of a woman.
