Bengaluru, Oct 25: Karnataka's third-biggest community Kuruba (shepherds) will organise a padayatra from Kaaginele in Haveri district to Bengaluru, with the demand to include their community in the list of Schedule Tribe castes. The march will be led under the joint leadership of Kuruba community seer Kaginele Niranjananadapuri Swamiji and Karnataka Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister KS Eshwarappa.

In a press conference on Saturday, Eshwarappa said that the padayatra of Kurubas will commence from Kaaginele to Bengaluru from January 5, 2021. "This is an apolitical movement. This is nothing to do with any party in power in Karnataka or elsewhere. This is the community's work. Therefore, we all join hands with our community seer," he said.

The seer, Niranjananadapuri Swamiji, stated that prior to organising the padayatra, the community will organise four massive conventions across the state. "The first convention will be the women's convention and this will be organised on November 8 in Kaaginele at Haveri,” said the Minister.

He further added that the community will organise other conventions in Davangere, Kalaburagi, Mysuru and Bagalakote districts.

One of the biggest conventions will be held in Bengaluru palace on February 7, to demand that the community be included in the list of ST castes. It is expected to have the participation of 10 lakh people.

Kuruba community's demand to include them into ST caste will pit them directly against the powerful Nayaka community in the state. Both communities claim that they are seven to eight per cent each of the voters in the state. Both communities are largely interlinked geographically, socially and politically in the state.

Notably, Kaginele Kanaka Guru Peetha is the main matha (monastery) of the Kuruba community and is the spiritual and cultural centre of this community. The Kurubas subscribe to the teachings of Kanakadasa, a renowned composer of Carnatic music, poet, philosopher, saint and a musician. He is known for his keertanas and ugabhoga, compositions in the Kannada language for Carnatic music. Like other Haridasas, he used simple Kannada language and native metrical forms for his compositions.

Bengaluru, Nov 21: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President DK Shivakumar said on Saturday that the CBI has summoned him to appear before it on November 23 in connection with a disproportionate assets case filed against him.

It’s true that I have received the summons,” Shivakumar told newsmen here.

“On November 19, the CBI officers came home, but nobody was there due to a personal event we were attending. The next morning, I came home and they gave me the summons. They’ve asked me to come on November 23,” he added.

On November 19, Shivakumar’s daughter Aishwarya got engaged to senior BJP leader and former External Affairs Minister SM Krishna’s grandson and Cafe Coffee Day founder (late) VG Siddhartha’s son Amartya.

Shivakumar said that he had requested the agency for permission to appear on November 25 instead of November 23. “Starting November 22, I’m travelling to Hospet (Ballari), Maski (Raichur) and then Basavakalyan (Bidar),” he added.

On October 5, the CBI raided 14 locations across Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai that were linked to Shivakumar in connection with alleged corruption cases against him.

In a statement, the CBI said it had booked the former minister for allegedly possessing disproportionate assets worth Rs 74 crore.

The CBI’s raids were preceded by a preliminary inquiry registered in March 2020, when Shivakumar was appointed as the KPCC President.

Bengaluru, Nov 28: In view of the increase in power tariff by the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission, apartments in Bengaluru are opting for solar panels to save both money and the environment.

This comes after the state government earlier this month had announced an over 5 per cent surge in power tariff.

"It really helps us because they are raising electricity bills. After doing a detailed analysis of this plan we formed a subcommittee within our apartment. It makes more sense now when the electricity price is going up," said Vishnu, Bangalore Apartments' Federation Secretary for Whitefield 1 and 2 clusters.

Harsha, an apartment resident of Trifecta starlight said the aim of installing solar panels is to give back to the environment.

"The main reason for installing the solar panels is that we wanted to do something for the environment. We wanted to produce something and give back to the environment. The second aspect is that we wanted to keep our costs low," said Harsha, a resident of Trifecta starlight apartment, where the solar panels have been installed at the terrace.

Earlier this month, the state electricity regulatory commission had announced a hike in the power tariff by 40 paise per unit.

According to the order, there has been a 40 paise increase per unit with an average increase of 5.4 per cent.

Puttur, Nov 28: A man and woman have reportedly duped many people after promising them to get jobs at Mangaluru International Airport.

The incident came to light after a job aspirant woman filed a complaint at Puttur town police station accusing Yatish Mareel and Navya of taking Rs 8,000 each from at least 10 women including herself.

The complainant, Shruthi, a resident of Mangaluru, has claimed that Navya made her believe that there are 10 vacancies in the airport and that the recruitment will be done for all posts together.

“Navya introduced Yatish Mareel as her brother and assured that he will help me getting a job. I paid Rs 8,000 to him as per Navya’s instruction. Yatish collected Rs 80,000 from 10 people and demanded more money from us. When we said that it is not possible to give more money, he used abusive words and switched off his mobile phone. Later when we contacted Navya, she gave evasive answers.”

Police have booked a case against Yatish Mareel and Navya.
