Bengaluru, Sept 23: Facing flak from various quarters, the Karnataka government restored chapters on historical figures Tipu Sultan, Hyder Ali and Sangolli Rayanna and instead dropped chapters on British rulers in India from history textbooks for Classes 6 and 7. This is part of the exercise to reduce the syllabus as reopening of schools has been delayed due to the Covid crisis.

In July, the government announced it had reduced syllabi by 30% as part of efforts to cut working days for classes 1 to 10 from the usual 200 days to 120. Among lessons truncated in Social Studies were chapter 5 of class 7 that deals with Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan, historical places of Mysuru, and the administration of commissioners.

Chapters on the drafting committee of the Constitution and salient features of the Constitution and ‘entire lessons’ on Jesus Christ and Prophet Mohammed had been dropped since they are taught in Class 9. This had triggered angry reactions and protests in the state.

Tipu Sultan has been a contentious figure, with BJP opposing the Siddaramaiah government’s decision to celebrate his birth anniversary. Some BJP MLAs had petitioned the Yediyurappa government to drop academic content on the Mysuru ruler.

‘Reduced syllabus will take away kids’ burden’

The government restored chapters on Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna, who fought the British as a general of Kittur Rani Chenamma, especially after it came under attack from community leaders and mutt pontiffs from the Kuruba community.

“We reduced the syllabus by 30% after restoring all controversial chapters. The report will be sent to the government and the new syllabus will be published on the portal soon after we get approval,” said MT Made Gowda, managing director, Karnataka Textbooks Society.

S Suresh Kumar, minister for primary and secondary education, said he’s looking into the report.

Education department officials, however, said the truncated version is expected to be published soon after the ongoing monsoon session scheduled to end on Saturday. “We were open to revision since our intention was never to hurt anybody’s sentiments or to deprive students from learning any particular lessons. The reduced version will take away unnecessary burden both on students and teachers considering the shortage of time,” said Suresh Kumar, insisting that the changes are applicable to only the current academic year.

The main objection was that it was done without consulting two expert committees appointed last year to look into demands from a section of BJP legislators to remove chapters that allegedly glorify Tipu Sultan.

The panel headed by Ashwath Narayan, a history professor from Mysuru University, was asked to make recommendations about the content in textbooks (classes 8 to 10) and the other led by TR Chandrashekhar, a retired history professor from Hampi University, was tasked with reviewing the history parts of classes 6 and 7. Both panels had advised against removing chapters on Tipu.

“The first version was defective asit removed certain chapters entirely and portions which were the continuity of what students had learnt in previous classes. Now, it has been corrected,” said Chandraskhekar.

New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party on Saturday alleged that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is being pushed towards a “slow death” inside Tihar jail by denying him insulin and consultations with his doctor.

Kejriwal, who has Type-2 diabetes, has been asking for insulin and a video conferencing with his family doctor but his requests are being denied by the jail administration, party spokesperson Saurabh Bharadwaj said in a press conference.

"I want to say with full responsibility that a conspiracy is underway for the slow death of Kejriwal," Bharadwaj claimed citing blood sugar readings of the Chief Minister in jail.

He also slammed the Tihar administration, BJP, Centre and Delhi LG for allegedly denying insulin to Kejriwal and said the Delhi Chief Minister had been suffering from diabetes for the last 20-22 years.

On Friday, the chief minister council Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi said Kejriwal has not been administered insulin to control his sugar levels since his arrest, terming it “shocking” and “alarming”.

The ED had on Thursday claimed before the court that Kejriwal was eating food high in sugar like mangoes and sweets every day, despite having Type-2 diabetes, to create grounds for medical bail.

Kejriwal, however, refuted the ED’s claims by asserting before a court that the food he consumed was in conformity with the diet chart prepared by his doctor.

“Out of 48 meals sent from home, only three times mangoes were there…,” Singhvi told the court.

Bharadwaj said Kejriwal was allowed by the court to use a machine in the jail to monitor his daily blood sugar levels.

"Overall, it was a conspiracy to finish Kejriwal so his multiple organ damage and when he comes out of jail after 2-4 months he goes for treatment of kidney, heart and other organs," said Bharadwaj, who holds the portfolio of health in Delhi government.

Mangaluru, May 4: A tragic incident unfurled last evening in Subrahmanya of Kadaba taluk in Dakshina Kananda, where a young gentleman, who had recently entered the bonds of matrimony a mere ten days hence, met his untimely demise due to a lightning strike.

As twilight descended, a tempestuous thunderstorm, accompanied by billowing rain clouds, cast its shadow over the locale.

Somasundar was diligently engaged in the task of piling up dried nuts in the yard to shield them from the impending deluge, when fate cruelly intervened, subjecting him to the fatal force of a lightning bolt.

Despite the expeditious efforts to convey him to Kadaba Community Hospital subsequent to his sudden indisposition, he tragically succumbed to his injuries.

Somasundar, who operated a car washing enterprise in proximity to Subrahmanya, is mourned by his mother, sister, and wife.

Bagalkot, Apr 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday accused the Congress of planning religion-based reservation in the country for the sake of vote bank politics but asserted that he will not let it happen.

He said this Congress proposal is to appease minorities as the SC/ST and OBC community is now with the BJP.

"In Karnataka, Congress has started a campaign to change the Constitution and to snatch away the rights of SC/ST and OBCs. Our Constitution does not accept religion-based reservation. But the Karnataka government has given part of OBC reservation to Muslims," Modi said.

Addressing a mega election rally in this district headquarters town, he said, "They (Congress) will not settle with this. They had earlier too in their manifesto said about coming out with a law to provide religion-based reservation. There is a similar signal in their manifesto this time."

"I want to make my Dalit, SC/ST and OBC brothers and sisters aware about Congress' intentions. These people on the basis of religion, to keep their vote bank safe, are planning to loot your right which was given by Babasaheb Ambedkar and the Constitution," he added.

Veteran BJP leader B S Yediyurappa, BJP candidates and MPs from Bagalkot (Bagalkot) and Vijayapura (Bijapur) - P C Gaddigoudar and Ramesh Jigajinagi, respectively - were among those present at the rally.

Noting that most of SC, ST and OBC MPs in the Parliament are from BJP, Modi said, "So they feel that as SC, ST and OBC are with BJP. To gain the trust of minorities, they want to loot from SC, ST and OBC and give it to minorities. Will you let this happen?"

"I want to guarantee today to my Dalit, Adivasi and OBC brothers and sisters. I will not let such intentions of Congress be successful. To protect your rights, your reservation, Modi will go to any extent. I'm assuring you this," he added.
