Two Mangalore girls for Asian Powerlifting Championships

Mangalore, April 8: Deepa and Amitha from Mangalore will represent India in the under-17 category Asian Powerlifting Championships 2012 to be held in Udaipur from May 1.

Both are from Shree Gokarnanatheshwara College here. They will attend the training camp later this month . Both were selected at the trials held in Himachal Pradesh in March.

Ms. Amitha is the first from her Kudumbur village near Baikampady to compete in an international championship. She said that her family encouraged her to learn wrestling and powerlifting. She was in two minds whether to choose wrestling or powerlifting. “I simply cannot understand the techniques of wrestling, but it was not so with powerlifting. I know how to do things with powerlifting,” Ms. Amitha said. She is pursuing a degree in Arts. Ms. Amitha trains in the 52-kg weight category.

She said that she wanted to give up her studies after completing her pre-university course, but one of her coaches convinced her to continue it along with powerlifting, she said.

Ms. Deepa, a B.Com student, said it was her coaches in the college who encouraged her to learn the sport. She also tried wrestling and even won a contest in Mysore. However, she said that she was better in powerlifting, as indicated by a number of competitions that she won. “I won more prizes in powerlifting, so I stuck to this,” Ms. Deepa said. She has won the first prize in the 47-kg category in the national powerlifting championship in Himachal Pradesh organised by the Indian Powerlifting Federation between March 25 and April 2. She also won the second prize in the national championship in Lucknow between March 1 and 5.

“I like accounting, but I have not given much thought to what I will do after I complete my degree,” Ms. Deepa said. Ms. Deepa said her parents were supportive .

Mangaluru: The KSRTC Mangaluru division has rolled back the fare hike on buses operating on the Mangaluru–Kasaragod route following the suspension of toll collection at the Arikkady toll plaza near Kumbala in Kasaragod district.

The fare revision had been implemented after the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) began toll collection at the Arikkady plaza on NH-66. As a result, fares for ordinary and Rajahamsa services were increased by ₹7 and ₹10, respectively, raising the bus fare from Mangaluru to Kasaragod from ₹81 to ₹88.

Senior Divisional Controller of KSRTC’s Mangaluru division, Rajesh Shetty, said the fares were reduced after toll collection at the Arikkady plaza was stopped. “The tollgate began operations on January 13, and the toll amount was deducted from the FASTag accounts of KSRTC buses operating on the route. Following an order from the central government to suspend toll collection, KSRTC has also withdrawn the additional fare with immediate effect,” he said.

At present, vehicles travelling on the Mangaluru–Kasaragod route pay toll only at the Talapady toll plaza. The toll for light motor vehicles (LMVs) at Talapady is ₹80 for a same-day return, while heavy vehicles, including buses, are charged ₹250. At Arikkady, the toll rates were ₹130 for LMVs (same-day return) and ₹450 for buses.

Protests against Arikkady toll plaza

The Arikkady toll plaza witnessed widespread protests from January 12, the day toll collection commenced. On the second day, an action committee led by Manjeshwar MLA A K M Ashraf launched an indefinite protest at the site. Except for the BJP, leaders and workers of most major political parties participated in the agitation.

On the night of January 14, a large number of protesters gathered at the plaza and vandalised property, following which authorities temporarily suspended toll operations. The BJP later also expressed opposition to the toll plaza and criticised NHAI’s decision.

Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta has urged the Centre to give high priority to offshore wind energy generation along the Mangaluru coast, citing its strategic importance to India’s green energy and port-led development goals.

Raising the issue in the Lok Sabha under Rule 377, Chowta said studies by the National Institute of Oceanography have identified the Mangaluru coastline as part of India’s promising offshore wind ‘Zone-2’, covering nearly 6,490 sq km. He noted that the region’s relatively low exposure to cyclones and earthquakes makes it suitable for long-term offshore wind projects and called for its development as a dedicated offshore wind energy zone.

Highlighting the role of New Mangalore Port, Chowta said its modern infrastructure, multiple berths and heavy cargo-handling capacity position it well as a logistics hub for transporting and assembling large wind energy equipment.

He also pointed to the presence of major industrial units such as MRPL, OMPL, UPCL and the Mangaluru SEZ, which could serve as direct buyers of green power through power purchase agreements, improving project viability and speeding up execution.

With Karnataka’s peak power demand crossing 18,000 MW in early 2025, Chowta stressed the need to diversify renewable energy sources. He added that offshore wind projects in the Arabian Sea are strategically safer compared to the cyclone-prone Bay of Bengal.

Calling the project vital to India’s target of 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030, Chowta urged the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy to initiate resource assessments, pilot projects and stakeholder consultations at the earliest.
