Mangalore, April 18: M B Rajesh, Palakkad MP, paid a visit to the Mangalore Jail on Wednesday and met Vittala Malekudiya, the MCJ student of Mangalore University who has been arrested by ANF for alleged naxal links.

Speaking to mediapersons later, the MP said that the allegations against Vittala are baseless. Terming the move of police as a gross human rights violation, Mr. Rajesh said that an attempt to suppress dissenting voices is being made by the authorities.

“This is not the first time it is happening. Earlier, Kerala journalist Shahina too was falsely arrested for alleged links with extremists. The proof that police claims to have got against Vittala is a book on Bhagat Singh and packets of sugar and rice in his house. If by merely reading a book on Bhagat Singh is a crime, we all should be put behind bars”, Mr. Rajesh said.

The CPI (M) leader, on the occasion, said that neither CPI nor DYFI that Vittala is a member of, supports naxalism. “Maoists and Naxals are killing our own people in Bengal. We are against naxalism”, he said.

Terming the Anti Naxal Force as 'anti-social', Mr. Rajesh alleged that the security forces are carrying out atrocities on tribals in the region. “I visited Vittala's village and spoke to his mother and the villagers. They are being tortured by the ANF. They take them away and torture them by keeping them in legal custody. This cannot be tolerated”, he said.

Accusing policemen of violating the court order, Mr. Rajesh said that the cops are not allowing Vittala to have access to his books in the jail. “When the court has permitted him to write the exams, it is their duty to allow him to have access to his books. By not doing so, they are violating the court order”, he said.

Vittala's detention will be made a national issue and a struggle at the national level will be initiated, the MP said. “I will bring this to the notice of the Chief Minister and raise the issue in the parliament. We will approach the National Human Rights Commission and the Commission for Scheduled Tribes too. Public opinion will be mobilized and a struggle will be carried out throughout the country”, he said.

Stating that the larger issue is of land grab, Mr. Rajesh said that the state government and police are working hand in glove in troubling the tribals. “They want to snatch the forest land legally owned by tribals. In Kodachadri too, tribals were made to evict. The package offered by the government is paltry. They want to offer Rs. 10 lakh when according to its own valuation, it comes up to about 25 to 50 lakhs. Even that amount of Rs 10 lakh does not reach the tribals in full. People are being forced to accept the amount and they receive mere 8 lakhs. The rest is consumed by NGO middlemen as commission. The government is also violating the Forest Rights Act”, he said.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
