Udupi, June 9: An official lost his life and at least several houses were damaged in separate rain-related incidents in Udupi district in past 48 hours.
The deceased has been identified as Ramesh Nayak(45), a resident of Ajekar village in Karkala taluk.
According to Karkala tahsildar Jaganath Rao, Mr Nayak was sleeping in his house when lightning struck him at around 9.45 p.m. on Thursday.
He was working as a Gram Panchayat Secretary in Udupi taluk, Mr. Rao said.
According to the information provided by the Deputy Commissioner's Office here, Udupi received a rainfall of 8.8 mm in 24 hours up to 8.30 a.m. on Friday. Kundapur and Karkala received a rainfall of23.2 mm and 2.6 mm, respectively.
Sources from Udupi Taluk Office said, the house of Shankara was completely damaged when a tree fell on it after rain hit Udyavara village. The loss had been estimated at Rs. 75,000
A house belonging to Shivaram Shetty was partially damaged when lightning struck it at Kadur village. The loss due to the damage to the house had been estimated at Rs. 50,000.
