Udupi, June 9: The Udupi district police arrested a person, who cheated and married eight women in different places in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu and Kasaragod districts in Madikeri on Saturday.

Sukumar alias Rajesh Anchan (32) was arrested by police in Madikeri with assistance from activists of Jayakarantaka Sanghatane. Sukumar was remanded to judicial custody for 15 days after he was produced before the court here.

Sukumar had married eight women over a period of last eight to nine years. The women whom he married are Deralakatte Meenakshi, Kasaragod Shambhavi, Uppinangady Andedadka Jayanti, Belapu Prema, Dharmasthala Kanyady Rajani, Malpe Bengre Revati, Madikeri Sunanda, and Mani Anantady Shubha.

Of the eight women he cheated and married, five have borne children. Deralakatte Meenakshi has a seven-year-old son. Kasaragod Shambhavi has a five-year-old daughter. Belapu Prema has a six-year-old son. Madikeri Sunanda has a two-year-old son. Uppinangady Andedadka Jayanti has a nine-month-old son. Mani Anantady Shubha is pregnant.
Sukumar belonged to Simantoor near Kinigoli in Dakshina Kannada district, police said. He worked as cleaner in many hotels in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Kasaragod districts, before becoming a cook. He was working as a cook at Somwarpete in Kodagu district, when he was traced.

The matter came to light when Ms. Shubha (23), resident of Anantady at Mani village near Vittal in Dakshina Kannada district, lodged a missing complaint at Vittal police station on May 16 stating that her husband had gone missing. The matter was published in a Kannada daily with the photograph of Sukumar. Ms. Malpe Bengre Revati, who read the newspaper on May 17, immediately informed the activists of the Jayakarnataka Sanghatane.

Speaking to presspersons here, President of district unit of Jayakarnataka Sanghatane J. Diwakar Shetty said that Sanghatane took about a couple of weeks to track the whereabouts of Sukumar. The organization then informed the police and helped it nabbing Sukumar in Madikeri.

Sukumar had managed to get dowry from most of the eight women. The Government should give financial assistance to the eight women cheated by Sukumar. Sukumar was a drunkard and a gambler. The Sanghatane had visited seven women, whom Sukumar had married, except Kasaragod Shambhavi, he said.

Ms. Malpe Bengre Revati said that Sukumar was a smooth talker and could impress anyone. That was how he had managed to trick people, she said.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday attacked the BJP over the obscene video case in Hassan district by questioning who gave the accused Prajwal Revanna a visa to go abroad. He also hit out at Union Minister Amit Shah asking why did he gave a ticket to Hassan JD(S) MP Prajwal, who is the accused in the sex scandal case.

He alleged that former Prime Minister and JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda planned the escape of his grandson and Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna abroad.

“Who gives passport and visa for travelling abroad? It’s the Centre. Can he go without the Centre’s knowledge? It was former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda who planned and sent him abroad,” the Chief Minister said.

"Prajwal pen drives case is not related to DCM DK Shivakumar. Why did Amit Shah give a ticket to the accused of a sex scandal?" he questioned.

Siddaramaiah also wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to direct the Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Home Affairs to cancel the Diplomatic Passport issued to Prajwal Revanna and ensure his return to face the law.

Prajwal is accused in an alleged sex scandal which is under investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Karnataka government. He is believed to have escaped to Germany shortly after polling in the first phase of elections in the state got over on April 26, in which Prajwal was the JD(S)-BJP combine's candidate from Hassan.

The Karnataka CM said that SIT will conduct an investigation in a transparent manner in the case.

Earlier, Siddaramaiah wrote on X, "The government has decided to form a special investigation team in connection with Prajwal Revanna's obscene video case. Obscene video clips are circulating in Hassan district, where it appears that women have been sexually assaulted."

Bagalkot, Apr 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday accused the Congress of planning religion-based reservation in the country for the sake of vote bank politics but asserted that he will not let it happen.

He said this Congress proposal is to appease minorities as the SC/ST and OBC community is now with the BJP.

"In Karnataka, Congress has started a campaign to change the Constitution and to snatch away the rights of SC/ST and OBCs. Our Constitution does not accept religion-based reservation. But the Karnataka government has given part of OBC reservation to Muslims," Modi said.

Addressing a mega election rally in this district headquarters town, he said, "They (Congress) will not settle with this. They had earlier too in their manifesto said about coming out with a law to provide religion-based reservation. There is a similar signal in their manifesto this time."

"I want to make my Dalit, SC/ST and OBC brothers and sisters aware about Congress' intentions. These people on the basis of religion, to keep their vote bank safe, are planning to loot your right which was given by Babasaheb Ambedkar and the Constitution," he added.

Veteran BJP leader B S Yediyurappa, BJP candidates and MPs from Bagalkot (Bagalkot) and Vijayapura (Bijapur) - P C Gaddigoudar and Ramesh Jigajinagi, respectively - were among those present at the rally.

Noting that most of SC, ST and OBC MPs in the Parliament are from BJP, Modi said, "So they feel that as SC, ST and OBC are with BJP. To gain the trust of minorities, they want to loot from SC, ST and OBC and give it to minorities. Will you let this happen?"

"I want to guarantee today to my Dalit, Adivasi and OBC brothers and sisters. I will not let such intentions of Congress be successful. To protect your rights, your reservation, Modi will go to any extent. I'm assuring you this," he added.

Mangaluru, Apr 23: As an outbreak of avian flu has been reported in some districts of neighbouring Kerala, the border areas of Karnataka, including Mangaluru, have been put on high alert, officials of the Karnataka Animal Husbandry department said.

At present, the situation in Kerala is being monitored before any action can be taken, they said.

“Our Kerala counterparts have assured us that the avian flu has been contained within Alappuzha district. However, loading, booking and carrying poultry and poultry products on trains and at railway stations are still under consideration (surveillance), the officials said.

Not only railways but also road transport ferrying chicken loads from Kerala to Mangaluru are under surveillance. Mangaluru, being one of the largest consumers of chicken from Kerala, has halted chicken procurement from Kerala-based suppliers.

Sudhakar Shetty, a market functionary, stated, “The animal husbandry department of Kerala has advised containment of avian flu within a few districts in Kerala. We are closely monitoring the situation.” Despite this, the market has not experienced significant fluctuations in supply yet, as local stocks have been adequate to meet the demand for the next few days.

Demand for chicken could fall for a few days due to a series of temple festivals in coastal areas, where many consumers refrain from consuming meat-based meals until Saturday. Nevertheless, Sunday could witness a change, as consumers may desire hot chicken curry for their Sunday meals, according to the local people.

As officials in the animal husbandry department in Dakshina Kannada have raised awareness in the market about avian flu in the neighbouring state, the question arises whether prices will fall if demand decreases.

“We do not want to contribute to the hysteria surrounding avian flu until our local stock falls below the level of demand,” said Aston D’Souza, a farm owner.

Dakshina Kannada also serves as a good market for suppliers from Shivamogga, Hassan, and Chikkamagaluru.

“In case supplies dwindle due to an unlikely prolonged shutdown of Kerala supplies, we can always purchase from those districts, albeit at a slightly higher cost than Kerala stock,” Shetty said.
