Mangalore, June 16: Six personalities were felicitated by the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy as part of its 2011 Honourary Award and Book Award felicitations on June 16 at Town Hall in Mangalore.

Awards were given away to Bola Chittaranjandas Shetty for Literature, Seetharam Shetty for Theatre, T A Srinivas for Cinema, Puttige Padmanabha Rai for novel writing, Ashok Alva for story writing and Ratnakar Rao Kavoor for play writing.

The Honourary Award consists of cash prize of Rs. 10,000 per recipient besides mementos, shawl and traditional gifts. The Book Award winners were given away a cash prize of Rs. 5,000, in addition to mementos, shawls and traditional gifts.

Bannanje Babu Amin, Folk Researcher, inaugurated the programme. Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP, and Krishna J Palemar, MLA, gave away the awards.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Kateel said that many people try to pressurize politicians and organisations for an award but such awards do not mean anything. The real recognition is when one is honored for his/her genuine contributions, which the Tulu Sahitya Academy has done, he said. Due to new experiments and approaches it was possible to revive the dying art of Yakshagana. The Academy must look at avenues and scope for greater research and experimentation which will help in retaining Tulu language and culture, the MP said.

Mr. Palemar in his address said that the state government has always put in efforts to protect the culture of Tulunadu. Besides granting funds for the Tulu Academy, the BJP led state government set up the Beary Sahitya Academy too, Mr. Palemar said. He also revealed on the occasion that he would release Rs. 10 lakhs from his MLA fund for the 'Tulu Bhavana' which is being constructed in the city.

A book titled 'Kavigalu Kanda Tulunadu' was released by litterateur Hampa Nagarajayya. The revamped website of the Academy was also launched on the occasion.

Gulzar Banu, Mayor, MCC, Capt. Ganesh Karnik, MLC, Shailaja Bhat, President, DK Zilla Panchayat, Katpadi Shankar Poojary, President, Udupi Zilla Panchayat, Ram Shetty, Film Director, were present among others.

Mangaluru, Dec 2: Mangaluru International Airport responded to a medical emergency late on Monday night. Air India Express flight IX 522, travelling from Riyadh to Thiruvananthapuram, was diverted to Mangaluru Airport after a passenger in his late 30s experienced a medical emergency on board.

The Airport’s Operations Control Centre received an alert regarding the passenger’s health condition. The airport activated its emergency response protocol, mobilising the airport medical team and coordinating with stakeholders including CISF, immigration, and customs.

Upon landing, airport medical personnel attended to the passenger, assessed his condition, and arranged to shift him to a local tertiary-care hospital for further treatment. The passenger’s relatives accompanied the passenger, who incidentally received necessary medical care on board, which helped stabilise the situation.

Following the handling of the emergency, the flight departed for Thiruvananthapuram at 2:05 am on Tuesday.

"We appreciate the cooperation of all parties involved, and this incident reaffirms our ongoing commitment to prioritising passenger safety and readiness to respond to unforeseen emergencies with professionalism and care," the Airport spokesperson said.
