Mangalore, August 8: A 'Health Check-up Camp' and 'Blood Donation Camp' will be conducted as part of Mangalore Airport Diamond Jubilee Celebration on August 19 at 8.45 a.m. at Ravindra Kala Bhavan, University College, Mangalore.
The camp will be organised under the joint auspices of Airport Authority of India (AAI), AAI Sports Control Board (AAISCB), Indian Red Cross Society and Dakshina Kannada and Nitte University, said Co-ordinator of Mangalore Airport Diamond Jubilee Celebration Committee K. Thejomaya.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, he said that the health camp would be beneficial to underprivileged patients, as they could not afford to pay the consultancy fees charged by private medical practitioners. A dental check-up will be provided, along with a short video clip on dental health and hygiene. There will be an eye-check up and free spectacles will be provided, if necessary. There will also be a check-up for heart diseases. Free medical treatment will be provided by medical practitioners along with free medicines sponsored by K.S. Hegde Medical Academy, Derelakatte. Around 500 to 600 underprivileged patients are expected to take part in the health camp, he said.
Secretary of AAISCB Shravan Kumar said that Lady Goschen and Wenlock Hospitals in Mangalore have shortage of blood units. The blood donation camp will be held to overcome the dire need of blood in Mangalore. Around 100 units of blood are expected to be collected, which will be donated to these two hospitals for the requirement of poor patients in the city. Students belonging to N.S.S., members of various Airport Employee Unions, members of Dakshina Kannada Auto-rickshaw Drivers Union and the general public will be taking part in the blood donation camp, he said.
Various associations in the city have come forward to support this cause. On the occasion, Pro-Chancellor of Nitte University Dr. K. Shantaram Shetty will deliver a small speech, said Mr. Thejomaya.
