Bulandshahr (UP), Dec 3: Two persons including a police inspector were killed and dozens of others suffered injuries during a mob violence ignited by self-proclaimed saviors of Hindutva in the name of cow in Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh today.

The deceased cop, Subodh Kumar Singh, was posted at the Syana Kotwali in Bulandshahr.

Mob assembled around a police outpost in Syana area after alleged recovery of animal bones, similar to that of a cow, from a sugarcane field. The mob later began attacking the outpost, which led to the death of Subodh Singh, the station in charge. The violent mob, which allegedly included BJP workers, opened fire and pelted stones on the cops besides torching dozens of vehicles.

Several policemen and protesters were also injured and were admitted to nearby hospitals. In addition, some police vans and other private vehicles were torched by the angry protesters.

According to the police, certain right wing groups along with locals protesting against the cow slaughter went on a rampage and attacked the Chingrawati police outpost, approximately 150 kms from the national capital, in Bulandshahr city.

A protester, Sumit Kumar, was injured in firing and was rushed to a hospital in Meerut where he succumbed to his injuries, the police said.

The atmosphere in Bulandshahr continues to be tense even as senior police officials including ADG Meerut zone Prashant Kumar reached the spot to take stock of the situation.

According to sources, some Hindutva chauvinists after finding carcasses of cattle in a field loaded them in a tractor and parked it near the Chingrawati police outpost. They claimed it was a case of cow slaughter and became embroiled in a clash with the police.

The incident occurred just a day after culmination of the ijtema or religious congregation of Tablighi Jama’at wherein lakhs of Muslim devotees, coming from all across the country and abroad, participated. Additional police forces have been deployed on the route being used be the devotees to return as isolated incidents of harassment have been reported at various places, although they are yet to be confirmed.

Mangaluru, Dec 3: A group of Congress workers gathered at the Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday to welcome AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, but the reception quickly turned into a display of support for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Venugopal arrived in the city to participate in the centenary commemoration of the historic dialogue between Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru. The event, organised by the Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, in association with the Mangalore University Sri Narayana Guru Study Chair, is being held on the university’s Konaje campus.

KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai and several party workers had assembled at the airport to receive Venugopal. However, the moment he stepped out, workers began raising slogans backing Shivakumar.

The university programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

This show of support comes just a day after Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar would lead the government “when the high command decides.” The chief minister made the comment after a breakfast meeting at Shivakumar’s residence—another public display of camaraderie between the two leaders amid ongoing attempts by the party high command to downplay their leadership rivalry.

Mangaluru, Dec 2: Mangaluru International Airport responded to a medical emergency late on Monday night. Air India Express flight IX 522, travelling from Riyadh to Thiruvananthapuram, was diverted to Mangaluru Airport after a passenger in his late 30s experienced a medical emergency on board.

The Airport’s Operations Control Centre received an alert regarding the passenger’s health condition. The airport activated its emergency response protocol, mobilising the airport medical team and coordinating with stakeholders including CISF, immigration, and customs.

Upon landing, airport medical personnel attended to the passenger, assessed his condition, and arranged to shift him to a local tertiary-care hospital for further treatment. The passenger’s relatives accompanied the passenger, who incidentally received necessary medical care on board, which helped stabilise the situation.

Following the handling of the emergency, the flight departed for Thiruvananthapuram at 2:05 am on Tuesday.

"We appreciate the cooperation of all parties involved, and this incident reaffirms our ongoing commitment to prioritising passenger safety and readiness to respond to unforeseen emergencies with professionalism and care," the Airport spokesperson said.

Udupi, Dec 1: A horrific case of alleged rape has unfolded in Udupi, where a worker from a Hindutva organisation, previously arrested and released on bail for harassing a young woman, is now accused of waylaying and sexually assaulting her.

The arrested individual has been identified as Pradeep Poojary (26), a member of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike's Nairkode unit in Perdur.

Poojary had allegedly been relentlessly harassing the young woman, pressuring her to marry him. When she bravely stood up to him and refused his demands, she filed a formal complaint at the Hiriyadka police station. He was subsequently arrested in that initial harassment case but was later granted bail.

According to police reports, driven by the same malicious grudge, Poojary allegedly intercepted the woman again on November 29. While she was walking through a deserted area, the accused is claimed to have threatened her by grabbing her neck. When she again refused to marry him, he allegedly proceeded to rape her.

The survivor immediately informed her family about the traumatic assault. Following this, her parents lodged a complaint at the Udupi women’s police station.

Police arrested Poojary again and produced him before the court. He has since been remanded to judicial custody.
