Mangalore, July 3: The five-day science exhibition organized by the department of public instruction at Pilikula Regional Science Centre in Pilikula opened several hitherto unknown wonders of science for students.
More than 4,000 students from different higher primary and high schools in the district share and showcase their knowledge and experience during this first ever Inspire Award Science Exhibition organised by the Department of Public Instructions.
The streetlights in this 'city' have a special feature. These streetlights switch on and switch off automatically, depending on the sunlight. This neat and clean 'city' belongs to Rakshitha and Savijna, students of Kumpala Government School, Thokkottu.
The model by Rakshitha and Savijna, is one of the many innovative ideas displayed by the students from the district, which shows that the nation has a promising future in the science and technology field. The models carry the themes ranging from energy conservation to after-effects of river diversions for developmental activities.
Gladline Crasta from St Raymond's High School at Vamanjoor developed a communication system which helps to alert the owner if there is any encroachment of property or in case of fire mishap. The sensors fixed on the compound wall of the property will automatically raise an alarm as well as give a call to the mobile phone of the owner.
Deeksha, from the same school displayed a solar cooker which works with the help of mirrors. Jumana from Noorul Huda English Medium School showcased her model combining two bells and a drum, which plays as the handle turns and could be used in the temples. Akash from Madhya Government School has come up with an alarm system, which warns the user, if any gas leakage occurs.
Around 140 models from the exhibition will be selected for the state-level exhibition. The programme is funded by the Union Science and Technology ministry. The district-level exhibition is organised with the coordination of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat and Pilikula Regional Science Centre.
Deputy Director of Public Instruction Mosses Jayashekhar said that the participants selected for the state-level will be given mementos and certificates by the Public Instruction department.
Earlier, Zilla Panchayat President K T Shailaja Bhat inaugurated the exhibition at the Regional Science Centre.
Addressing the teachers from different schools, she opined that it is the duty of teachers to find out and nurture the talents of students. “India has a very rich history of successful scientific researches and explorations. Even in our legends, there are descriptions of aircraft and so on. We have also contributed many talented scientists of first order to the world,” she said.
MLA Abhayachandra Jain presided over the function. Pilikula Nisargadhama Director J R Lobo, Teachers' Training Institute Principal Philomina Lobo, ZP Member Yashwanthi Alva, Deputy Director of Public Instruction Mosses Jayashekhar, Education Officer Sadanand Punja were also present during the inaugural function.
