Kasargod, July 16: The district administration has enforced restrictions on constructing places of worship in the district in the light of recurring attacks on such places and frequent communal tensions.
S. Surendran, Superintendent of Police, said that Individuals and organisations should seek the permission of the district administration before commencing work on places of worship in the district.
The administration had decided to closely monitor the frequent movement of people in any specific building as such facilities were later converted as places of worship, he said adding that no building should be allowed to be misused in the name of religion.
A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of senior officials of the district administration and police officials held in Thiruvananthapuram the other day following concerns expressed by the Union Home Ministry that certain places could be used for nefarious activities by unscrupulous elements.
The State government, in the meantime, had come out with a special package to ensure law and order in the district.
The Home Minister had reportedly instructed the State Police Chief to initiate effective steps to restore normality in the event of outbreak of clashes.
Meanwhile, the Kasaragod Samyuktha Jamaat committee had flayed the administration's decision. It said such moves could hurt the religious sentiments of the people.
The decision taken at the meeting in the State capital was part of the “dubious” moves by certain officials to categorise Kasaragod as a region riddled with fundamental and extremist elements, observed an executive meeting of the committee here on Sunday.
If authorities prevented construction of places of worship in the name of law and order that would have far-reaching consequences, the committee chaired by its president Cherkalam Abdulla said.
