Mangalore, July 29: A day after brutal Hindutva attack on a private homestay Congress workers and students erupted in protests in Mangalore defying the prohibitory orders.

Around 50 Congress activists and students were briefly detained by the police when the staged a protest in front of MCC building here on Sunday evening. The police also resort to mild lathi charge to disperse the crowd.

Intelligent method of “gang rape”

Meanwhile former union minister B Janardhan Poojary said that the attack on youth who were celebrating the birthday of one of their friends by the Hindu organisation was nothing but an intelligent method of gang rape.

Speaking to presspersons here on Sunday, he said Hinduism preaches respecting women and not assaulting women. The attackers accused the students of indulging in immoral activities. They slapped and molested the girls, pushing them around. Is this culture of Hinduism?” he questioned.

He alleged that the attackers outraged the modesty of women.

Stating that the attack on the youth is an condemnable act, Poojary said all those who were engaged in barbaric and cruel act should be booked under Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Bootleggers, Drug offenders, gamblers, Goondas, immoral traffic offenders and slum grabbers Act 1985 and The Karnataka Control of Organised Crime Act 2000.

He said “Sangha Parivar members which is a part of the BJP has been engaged in all sorts of attacks and assaults from the beginning. If the State government had taken stringent action against those who were involved in the pub attack in 2009, the city would not have witnessed such a barbaric incident”

“The State government is inactive and the BJP government is supporting such incidents. Home Minister R Ashok is one the weakest ministers. One of the attackers Subhash was involved in pub attack as well,” he said.

The police should take the issue seriously and take stringent action against the culprits. The incident has clearly shown the failure of the State government. He said that Sangh Parivar members only speak on respecting women. However, in reality, they are engaged in disrespecting women.

Bundh

Meanwhile Youth Congress and Mangalore University All College Students' Union has called for a college bandh on July 30 in Mangalore taluk to protest against attack on students at a boarding house at Padil on Saturday. In a release the union claimed that attacks on students were on the rise and they were affecting their education.

However, Mr Poojary flayed the bundh call given by the Youth Congress and said that bandh is not allowed as per the law.

Later, addressing the mediapersons, district Mahila Congress President Mamatha Gatti said that the attack on the students is an condemnable act. The Hindutva preached by Swami Vivekananda makes one respect women.

“When the state government had organised a rave party at Malpe, why didn't the BJP Mahila Morcha members stage a protest against the rave party,” she asked.

She said that Mahila Congress members will submit a memorandum to City Police Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner, urging the authorities to initiate action against the culprits on Monday.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.
