Mangalore, August 3: With the aim of building brotherly relations among workers, the Dakshina Kananda district unit of Akhila Bharata Karmika Sangha (ABKS) will be organising 'Rashtra-Raksha' on August 5 at 10 a.m. in 'Sai Kripa' building at Kottara Chowki, Mangalore.

Announcing this at a press conference here on Friday, General Secretary of the unit Sudatta Jain said that Raksha Bandhan should not be limited to one class or group of people, but rather brotherliness should be followed by the entire society.

He said that certain incidents have disrupted the harmony in Mangalore and have put a black mark on it.

“Today, as we all work towards national development, as we are all labourers, fellowship between each other is of utmost importance. Due to corrupt politicians and officials handling the administration of the country, the fellowship between labourer classes is being turned into dust in the name of religion and casteism,” he said.

Speaking about the lack of facilities provided by the ESI Corporation, he said that the Sangha had submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Karnataka citing their demands.

Among their demands was provision of supplies necessary for all types of treatments at the ESI Hospital in Kadri, which was meant for labourers. Other demands included appointment of doctors and staff for all vacant posts at the hospital and treatment of ESI card holders and their families at ESI hospital itself. The Sangha also demanded that a hospital-concerned committee should be formed by the Corporation, and discussions should be held every month.

Also included in their list of demands was provision of ambulances and buses by the Corporation displaying the name of ESI hospital of the concerned area, and setting up of a sub-regional office for ESI card holders in Mangalore as soon as possible to make it easier for labourers belonging to Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

The Sangha also demanded that various industries and institutions make facilities for workers to avail the ESI card, and also that labourers be paid their due at the right time, instead of being delayed.

Other office-bearers of ABKS Donald Karkala, Saju, Asha Anand Devadiga and Padmanabha Shetty Niddodi were present at the press meet.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.
