25% of malaria cases of Karnataka reported from DK, Udupi'

August 6, 2012
Mangalore, August 6: Around 25 per cent of malaria cases found in the state of Karnataka were reported from its twin coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, said Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Dr. K.N. Vijayaprakash.

Delivering the keynote address at the inaugural session of a workshop for media representatives on 'National Vector-borne Diseases Control Programme' jointly organized by Dakshina Kannada district administration, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, District Health and Family Welfare Department and District Vector Borne Diseases Control Office, Dakshina Kannada, on Monday at Wenlock District Hospital RAPCC Auditorium, he said that importance should be given to health education and literacy.

He said that there were as many as 3,16,000 children studying in 1454 primary schools and 177 high schools across Dakshina Kannad district. It is very necessary that the message of seasonal diseases be propagated through them. Experts on health or officials from Health Department could talk on seasonal and water-borne diseases for 5-10 minutes a day in schools during prayer time. Even a small message such as washing of hands before meals could be helpful in the eradication of diseases, he said.

He said that 3612 cases of malaria and 129 cases of dengue had been established in Dakshina Kannada in 2012 till July. Malaria cases are found more in the city as compared to last year, whereas cases of dengue are seen more in the rural areas. Steps have to be implemented to stop the dissemination of both diseases irrespective of the urban or rural areas. It is the responsibility of the media representatives to generate awareness among people, so that these diseases can be eradicated. By means of human resources, we can more effectively propagate the message and educate the masses, he said.

District Health Officer O.R. Shrirangappa said that mosquito nets were the most effective way of preventing diseases like malaria, dengue and chikungunya. It is essential that each individual takes care of his/her own health, he said.

Presenting a power point presentation on diseases like malaria, dengue and lymphatic filariasis, District Vector Borne Disease Control Officer Dr. Arunkumar explained the historical facts of the diseases, their statistics in the district, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and control strategies. Speaking about lymphatic filariasis, he said that more than 1000 cases were reported in the coastal regions of Mangalore, Bantwal and Puttur.

Speaking on the occasion, President of Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists' Union P. B. Harish Rai said that awareness of vector-borne diseases should be created by media, and propagated to the people.

District Information Officer Rohini K. was the chief guest on the occasion. Bhaskar proposed a vote of thanks.

Karnataka: BJP leader and advocate G Devaraje Gowda was arrested in connection with a sex abuse video allegedly belonging to Hassan JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna.

According to police, Devaraje Gowda was arrested at Gulihal tollgate by the Hiriyur police in this district on Friday night for leaking the video in a pen drive.

He was arrested on a tip-off received by the Hassan police, which wanted his presence for the case.

Several explicit videos involving Prajwal started making the rounds ahead of the first phase of Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka, which took place on April 26.

The MP, a grandson of former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, is absconding and a 'blue corner' notice has been issued against him by Interpol.

Three FIRs, including charges of rape, molestation, intimidation, blackmailing and threatening, have been registered against Prajwal.

Devaraje Gowda is accused of leaking these videos, which he has categorically rejected.

He contested in the 2023 Assembly elections against JD(S) MLA from Holenarasipura H D Revanna.

H D Revanna, father of Prajwal, is at present in jail on charges of kidnapping a woman, a mother of three.

Ahead of polls, Devaraje Gowda had warned BJP’s central leadership against backing Prajwal Revanna and brought his sex scandal to light.

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has written to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, urging him to extend all possible help to the victims of JD(S) leader Prajwal Revanna's alleged sexual abuse.

In a letter to Siddaramaiah, Gandhi condemned the actions of Revanna, an MP from Hassan in Karnataka, and accused him of enjoying immunity with the blessings of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

In a veiled attack on Modi, the Congress leader said he has never come across a senior public representative who has constantly chosen silence in the face of untold violence against women.

"I request you to kindly extend all possible support to the victims," Gandhi said in his letter to the Karnataka chief minister.

"They deserve our compassion and solidarity as they fight their battle for justice. We have a collective duty to ensure that all parties responsible for these heinous crimes are brought to book," he added.

Describing the incidents as "horrific sexual violence" unleashed by the incumbent Member of Parliament, Gandhi alleged that Revanna sexually assaulted and filmed hundreds of women over several years.

"Many who looked up to him as a brother and son were brutalised in the most violent manner and robbed of their dignity. The rape of our mothers and sisters warrants the strictest possible punishment."

"I am deeply shocked to learn that as far back as December 2023, our Home Minister Shri Amit Shah was informed by Shri G Devaraje Gowda about Prajwal Revanna's antecedents, especially his history of sexual violence and the presence of videos filmed by the perpetrator," the former Congress chief said.

He said what is even more shocking is that despite these gruesome allegations being brought to the notice of the seniormost leadership of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Centre, Modi campaigned and canvassed for a "mass rapist".

"Furthermore, the Union government wilfully allowed him to flee India to derail any meaningful investigation. The deeply perverse nature of these crimes and the absolute immunity enjoyed by Prajwal Revanna with the blessings of the Prime Minister and Home Minister deserves the strongest condemnation," Gandhi said.

"In my two decades in public life, I have never come across a senior public representative who has constantly chosen silence in the face of untold violence against women. From our wrestlers in Haryana to our sisters in Manipur, Indian women are bearing the brunt of the Prime Minister's tacit support for such criminals," he alleged.

In this backdrop, Gandhi said the Congress has a moral duty to fight for justice for "our mothers and sisters".

"I understand that the Karnataka government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the grave allegations, and a request has been made to the Prime Minister to cancel Prajwal Revanna's diplomatic passport and get him extradited to India at the earliest," he said.

H D Revanna, the Janata Dal (Secular) MLA from Holenarasipura in Karnataka's Hassan district, is the son of former prime minister and JD(S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda and elder brother of former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy. He is facing allegations of sexually abusing women.
