Udupi, August 26: The model fish market built at Padubidri in association with National Fisheries Development Corporation was formally inaugurated on Sunday by district-in-charge minister Kota Srinivas Poojary.
Speaking on the occasion Mr Poojary said that the government has increased the subsidy of houses to be allotted to the fishermen from Rs 40,000 to Rs 60,000. Subsidy to asmany as 260 beneficiaries of Mathsashraya progeramme have been sanctioned to Udupi district, which would be handed soon, he said.
President of Padubidri Grama Panchayath Vijayalaxmi Acharya said that a 15 per cent fish selling windows would be reserved for dry fish sellers. All the fisher women would be supplied with ice box, baskets, steel trays etc. A 15 member subcommittee would be formed to look after the affairs of the new market and the revenue earned at the market would be of great help to the Panchayath, she said.
The new 6,200 sq ft fish market has been built at a cost of Rs 76.92 lakh, on 20 cents of land, with the 90:10 funds from Central and State governments respectively. It houses 80 fish selling windows, rest room, toilets and TV watching facility too.
Udupi-Chikmagalur MP K Jayaprakash Hegde, President of the Coastal Development Authority Nagaraj Shetty, Kaup MLA Lalaji R Mendon and others were present.
