Mangalore, August 27: Hundreds of Mangaloreans led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Monday laid siege to Mangalore City Corporation alleging that the civic body followed anti-people policies.

The protesters who took out separate rallies from Kankanady, State Bank, Nanthoor, Yeyyadi, and Urwa Stores in the morning gathered in front of the MCC building at around 11:30 a.m.

Flagging off the dharna, B. Madhav, CPI (M) district secretary, said that even though many roads in the city had been concretised for quite some time, there were still no footpaths for pedestrians to walk on. In the name of concretisation, huge amount of money that had been allotted for the construction of footpaths in the city has been gobbled by corrupt BJP leaders and MCC corporators. The new buildings being constructed in the city do not consist of parking facilities. People are further fleeced by having to use the pay-parking facility on roadsides. The MCC has become incompetent, and people of Mangalore suffer because of it. The silence of the people increases their inefficiency, he said.

Vasanth Achari, District Secretary of CPI (M), lashed out at the Mangalore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) for its various taxes. Even the self-assessment property tax has been increased. It is currently three to four times higher than it was before, whereas BJP had promised to remove the tax system. The ruling party is robbing the people of their hard-earned money, he said.

Terming the ruling BJP as uncivilized, he said that they dictated the civic body. The Congress too does not make it simpler as it is hand-in-hand with the corrupt BJP administration. Both the parties are two sides of the same coin who are only bothered about making profit than solving the problems of the citizens. 65 per cent of the people within the Corporation limits are poor. While the prices of all the commodities have been hiked, how the common man can survive, he questioned.

Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of the protest, Sunil Kumar Bajal, CPI (M) leader, said that the MCC had been inconsistent in its administration. Roads in the city were concretised without the construction of drainages. There is no drainage system in the city. With heavy rains, sewage water overflows on the streets, thereby leading to rise in contagious diseases like malaria, dengue and chikungunya in the city. There have been no proper measures implemented by the Corporation. Even the assured door-to-door collection of waste disposal has not been done so far, and garbage can be seen littered on the roads due to irregular collection of garbage bins in the city. In the name of the city's beautification, vast amount of sum is being pocketed by the corrupt corporators. The Corporation has to address our demands and take action, he said.

Another CPI (M) leader Krishnappa Konchady said that the Congress party was a mute spectators against the injustice meted out to people. It does not take any action against the prevalent corruption in the system. The atrocities being committed by MCC corporators on Dalits was proof of their bad governance, he said, referring to the BJP.

Muneer Katipalla, Dakshina Kannada District President of DYFI also spoke.

Mangaluru: A native of Kerala was arrested on charge of misbehaving with crew on an Air India Express flight while travelling from Dubai to Mangaluru International Airport. The man even threatened to jump from the aircraft, according to officials.

Siddartha Das, the security coordinator for Air India Express, lodged a complaint against the passenger, identified as Muhammad BC from Kannur, Kerala, after which he was caught by the airport security once the flight landed at Mangaluru. He was later handed over to the police.

DCP (Law and Order) Sidharth Goyal said the incident occurred on Flight IX814 on May 8.

When the flight was above the sea, Muhammad reportedly said he wanted to get off the plane, posing a threat to all on board. The unruly flyer was detained by airport security once the flight landed at Mangaluru International Airport and he was handed over to Bajpe police station officials.

Sources added once the flight took off from Dubai, the accused went to the lavatory and thereafter started inquiring with the cabin crew about a person named Krishna who was not on the flight. Muhammad kept on pressing the bell for in-flight assistance, even though the cabin crew members were near at hand. He then picked up a life jacket, gave it to a crew member, and said he wanted to use it upon landing.

Bengaluru: Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Sunday said that the Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing into sexual abuse charges against Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, will not be going abroad to bring him back, and the Interpol will share information about him.

He also cautioned political leaders about making public statements or sharing information in connection with the case, which is sensitive.

The 33-year-old Prajwal Revanna, who is grandson of JD(S) patriarch and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, is facing charges of sexually abusing several women.

The scandal has raised a political storm with the ruling Congress and BJP-JD(S) engaged in a slugfest.

Prajwal Revanna is said to have flown abroad on April 27, a day after the first phase of Lok Sabha polls in Karnataka was held.

He was BJP-JD(S) alliance's joint candidate from Hassan Lok Sabha segment, which went to polls in the first phase.

"No, there is no such option. Blue Corner Notice has been issued and the Interpol will share the information. The respective country in which he is found or identified - they will inform them (Interpol) and then our agencies, the CBI will get to know, and through them we will get to know."

"So far there is no information," Parameshwara said.

He was responding to a question on reports about the SIT team travelling abroad in connection with the case.

Speaking to reporters, he said, "Investigation is going on, not to affect the investigation we don't want to share any information."

Responding to a question on Union Minister Pralhad Joshi's statement alleging conspiracy behind the arrest of BJP leader Devaraje Gowda, for making allegations against Congress leaders in connection with the case, Parameshwara said, "If anyone says anything I cannot react to it. We cannot respond to every public statement. As this is a serious case, we cannot share information until the investigation is completed."

"My request to the public and to our leaders is to be cautious while making statements. If not, based on the statements given by them, we may have to call them for investigation and record their statement under 41 A of CrPC," he added.

Asked whether JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy will also be served notice, the Minister said he is a former CM and that he believes that the former has taken this case seriously.

"Before giving any statements on this case or before sharing any information in the public domain, one has to be cautious, and this applies to all," he added.

Naturals Ice Cream founder Raghunandan Kamath passed away following a brief illness. Born to a mango vendor in a village in Mangaluru, Kamath went on to establish Naturals, an ice cream parlour estimated to be worth Rs 400 crore today.

"Our thoughts on the sad demise of our patron and founder of Naturals Ice Cream, Late Raghunandan Kamath. Indeed a very sad and unfortunate day for us," the company said.

Mr Kamath grew up helping his father in selling mangoes in a village Karnataka's Mangaluru. This was when he learned the art of picking the ripe fruit, plucking it, sorting it, and preserving it.

As the legend goes, a young 14-year-old Kamath boarded a train from Mangaluru and came to Mumbai (then Bombay).

After working at his brother’s restaurant, Kamath had an idea — if ice creams have fruit flavours, why can’t they have real fruits. He decided to fill this void in the market. But unsure of whether customers would come, he began his business with serving pav-bhaji as the main dish and the ice cream as an add on.

His first ice cream parlour was launched in 1984 in Juhu, with the initial menu featuring around 12 flavours, each being a testament to the knowledge he acquired during the time he assisted his father in Mangaluru.

The demand kept growing and he opened five more outlets in 1994. Currently, it has over 165 outlets across 15 cities.

His story was captured expansively in ‘Intelligent Fanatics of India’, a book co-authored by Mumbai-based journalist Pooja Bhula.

Inspired by his mother's techniques, Kamath also developed innovative machines to streamline production and ensure consistency, notes the company website.
