Mangalore, September 17: Police have apprehended seven persons in connection with stealing valuables from people in the garb of devotees from temples.

Addressing media persons at a press meet in Mangalore on Monday, Abhishek Goyal, SP, Dakshina Kannada, said that on September 11, Belthangady police personnel deputed on vehicle patrolling near Kanyadi in Dharmasthala stopped a Tavera car bearing registration number KA-22-3339. Seven persons and three children in the car tried to escape but were caught and interrogated and found out that they were engaging in stealing in the garb of devotees from temples.

The accused are Srinivas alias Sheenu (32), Moulana Saab (35), Suresh Soma Reddy Kodagante (28), Lakkavva alias Lakkamma (45), Sharada (24), Tippavva (35) and Kamala Parvathi (65), all hailing from Gadag district.

They would pose as devotees in prominent temples and steal cash and gold from other devotees, Mr. Goyal said. They have in the past resorted to stealing in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu as well. 4 mobile phones, Rs. 3,200 in cash and jewellery worth Rs. 7,00,000 have been recovered from the accused.

'Urudelu girl's death a murder, not unnatural'

The death of Savitha (28) whose body was found in a well near her house in Urudelu village in Belthangady on September 7, was not an unnatural death or suicide but was a murder, Mr. Goyal informed.

Savitha had an affair with Umesha, the husband of Sharada and it was suspected that he could have been behind the murder. When police interrogated him, he revealed that Savitha did indeed have an affair with him and was pressurizing him to leave Sharada, his wife and her own elder sister, and marry her. Frustrated by her constant pressure, Umesha resorted to killing her. Through a telephone call, he asked her to come out of the house and pushed her into the well, Mr. Goyal said.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.
